What is the Best Insecticide for Crape Myrtle Bark Scale?

Based on the expert guidance from Miller Tree Service and research from the LSU AgCenter, the most effective treatments for crape myrtle bark scale (CMBS) include both systemic insecticides and organic options:

  • Systemic Insecticides (Imidacloprid): An imidacloprid soil drench is widely considered a premier treatment. It is applied to the root zone in early spring as sap rises. The tree absorbs the insecticide and transports it to the canopy, targeting scale insects as they feed on the sap.
  • Horticultural Oils: These are effective organic options used during the dormant season (late winter) to smother overwintering nymphs before they become active. They can also be used as foliar sprays during the crawler stage in late spring.
  • Other Organic Alternatives: Neem oil and insecticidal soaps can be used to disrupt the insects’ feeding and cell membranes, though they typically require more frequent applications than systemic treatments.

Timing is critical for these treatments. Systemic drenches work best in early spring, while oils should be applied before buds break in late winter or specifically targeted at the “crawler” stage in May and June when the insects lack their protective waxy coating.
